VB Script web page calculating various aviation navigation data. Note - the results from this calculator must not be used where navigation accuracy is required for safety. see notes at the bottom of the page.

This page will calculate combinations of the following:

Great Circle distances between two points.(nautical/statute/kilometers)
The initial true course from A to B.
Sunrise & sunset times in UTC for point A and/or B.
Total voyage time & day/night flight totals required for pilot logbooks.
Average groundspeed (nautical/statute/kilometers) /hour

Note ALL latitude & longitude entries MUST be 15 chars in length.

Enter Departure Point A eg N8959.9E17959.9        Date (dd/mm/yyyy)           Time UTC(hh:mm)

Enter Arrival Point B eg S0159.9W00009.9            Date (dd/mm/yyyy)           Time UTC(hh:mm)

Check Box if great circle route co-ordinates required.                              Time Interval (mins)

Check Box if real day/night time calculation required

Results (they can be cut & pasted into your own applications if required)

  1. Any combination of fields can be entered - leave fields blank if certain reults not required.
  2. The Example button inputs a 11 hour flight from Heathrow(EGLL) to Narita, Tokyo(RJAA).
  3. This calculator uses a spherical earth model where 1'=1nm.
  4. This calculator will calculate the shorter of the two GC routes between points.
  5. The model assumes the sun's civil zenith is 90deg 50mins.
  6. All displayed sunrise & sunset times are in UTC for the location and date entered.
  7. Aviation night time is assumed for day/night flight times i.e. daylight is from 1/2 hr before sunrise until1/2 hr after sunset..
  8. If the checkbox is ticked actual sunset/sunrise times will be used in the calculation for day/night flight times.
  9. This page can be used by pilots for logbook time calculations.
  10. This page will calculate virtually any length of journey but performance is seriously degraded if GC track route data is required. Depends how fast your browser/CPU combination is.
